Heaven & Earth
I was growing weary of taking the same old library photographs of Shanghai: the Oriental Pearl Tower against puffy white clouds and an azure sky. I wanted to break the rules: create a series of images that are graphically simple ~ yet visually, viscerally and intellectually stimulating. Familiar subjects photographed in an unfamiliar way. I wanted to take images of easily recognizable buildings in a manner that would stop, surprise and make the viewer think.
In Heaven & Earth the immovable architectural wonders of Shanghai are placed in stark contrast to the raw, awe-inspiring fluidity of the heavens. These images show the apparent contradiction of the clearly defined buildings -- which will not last forever -- against the constantly flowing, impressionistic and "eternal" sky.
