Waibaidu Bridge
Waibaidu ~ or Garden Bridge ~ is a fascinating structure. It is short, squat, made from industrial steel, over a hundred years old and far from photogenic. It’s a bridge with character, it’s been around the block once or twice ~ seen War, Peace, Communism, Capitalism … the works. It is not beautiful, but it has heaps of charisma. It is, if you like, the Winston Churchill of bridges. And it is one of Shanghai's most enduring and beloved icons.
